Leave No Trace

One of the most influential conservation movements of the last few decades is Leave No Trace, a philosophy founded by the organization of the same name. Leave No Trace’s primary goal is to minimize human impact on the natural world.

Try to Leave No Trace when you visit the Rye Nature Center this spring by following these key tenets:

  • Carry In, Carry Out: The Rye Nature Center is a Carry In, Carry Out facility, which means any trash you bring onto the grounds should be carried out with you.

  • Brush Your Boots: Invasive seeds and insects often hitch a ride on hikers’ shoes, so brush your hiking shoes before and after you visit the grounds.

  • Avoid Campfires: Please do not set fires on the Nature Center grounds. Our fire pit is only to be used in programs hosted by Friends of Rye Nature Center.

  • Stay On Trails: Our trails are in place to keep hikers safe and to prevent unnecessary impact on the landscape. You can find a trail map on our grounds or on our website.

  • No Paws or Wheels: To protect sensitive rehabilitating wildlife, dogs and bikes are not allowed on the Rye Nature Center grounds. If you bike to the Nature Center, you can leave your bicycle at the bike rack by our welcome kiosk.

  • Educate Yourself: Learn more about the Nature Center, the grounds, and the wildlife by reading our signs and talking with our staff. If you have any questions about how to explore the Nature Center thoughtfully, our team is more than happy to help.

  • Be Mindful: You are out in nature, so enjoy it! Just keep in mind that others are trying to enjoy nature, too. Be aware and respectful of people, wildlife, and constructs on the grounds.

Please help us preserve our grounds and the world around us by Leaving No Trace whenever you adventure in nature.
