Rye Water

—Mary Gillick, Program Director

We've had a fairly dry summer with above average temperatures that further depleted the soil moisture in our gardens and at the RNC forest. We saw early leaf fall on some of the center's rocky points but the recent rainfall from Matthew eased the stress on the local soil wildlife.

Through July, August and September the area received only 6 inches of rainfall. The normal range is from 10 to 12 inches for that period.

You may have received a press release from Suez, the company who manages the water supply for Rye. They obtain 40% of Rye's water from the Westchester Joint Water Works. The other 60% comes from Aquarion Water in Connecticut who also manages the reservoirs for Greenwich, Darien, Stamford and New Canaan.

In late September, Aquarion asked Suez to look into purchasing more water from the New York System due to the low level of their Connecticut reservoirs which were at 33% of capacity in mid-September. Westchester Joint Water Works is connected to the NYC reservoirs in the Catskills.
