April Showers
—Allison Bedosky, Education Director
Everyone has heard of the phrase, "April showers, bring May flowers," but can we easily recall where the saying came from? Or the meaning of this popular saying? Well, not only can we learn an important lesson on patience, but scientifically the slogan is actually, pretty accurate.
This famous rhyme originated in 1557 when Thomas Tusser included it in a collection of writings that he called "A Hundred Good Points of Husbandry." As part of a short poem, Tusser writes in his April, and springtime section:
Sweet April Showers
Do spring May flowers.
This saying could not be more fitting after the winter we've had in the Northeast since its true meaning tells us to be patient because good things will come to those who wait. With feet of snow and months of freezing temperatures, we are all looking forward, with enthusiasm to a warm and sunny spring. Since we know that May will bring about lovely colors of blooming flowers, we must sit patiently for one more month of damp, cool, and sometimes dreary conditions.
Although we may not always look forward to a rainy season, we understand that spring brings about some necessary happenings in order for us to enjoy the sights and smells of May. Three of these common signs that contribute to the beauty of May are rising temperatures, active wildlife, and of course, rain. Once the ground thaws and the temperatures increase, it becomes the perfect time for plants to reopen and for seeds to sprout. In addition, the return of animals increase seed dispersal and the presence of insects help with pollination and reproduction. Finally, abundant rain and increased levels of moisture in the soil help plants grow quicker and healthier.
When May comes and we are surrounded by beautiful flowers and buzzing insects, who is really going to remember all that rain anyway? Good things are right around the corner!
