Please note that classes will be cancelled if Rye schools are closed for inclement weather.  Morning classes will be cancelled in the event of delayed school openings.  Afternoon classes will be cancelled in the event of early dismissal at Rye schools.

NEW CLASSES, WORKSHOPS, & EVENTS!  Check out our "School's Out Workshops" on days in March and May when the elementary schools are closed or there is early dismissal. Come to "Fat Tire Day!" Bring your mountain bike and try some off-roading on our trails in June.

EXPANDED AFTERSCHOOL CLASSES & SCIENCE REVIEW! We've added an additional Wild Outside to our line-up as well as well as group Science review sessions for fourth grade.

 

 

 
 

 

SPRING ECOLOGY CLASSES
 

Preschool Ecology Program   Calling all 3 1/2 - 5 year olds! Come learn about nature, forestry, and animals through arts and crafts, stories, and outdoor hikes. Tuesdays starting March 23, 12:30 - 2:00 pm or Thursdays starting March 25, 10:00 - 11:30 am. $240 members/$270 non-members. Click here for more information.

Kindergarten Eco-Adventures  Only for Kindergarteners.  Hands-on fun, ecology, and adventures.  Class is designed to reinforce the science curriculum of the first year of elementary school. Thursdays starting March 25, 1:00 - 2:30 pm. $240 members/$270 non-members. Click here for more information.

Wild Outside   For 5 - 7 year olds looking for an after-school outdoor adventure program.  Wednesdays starting March 24 3:30 - 4:30 pm (8 weeks, $140 members/$160 non-members) or Thursdays starting March 25 3:30-4:30 pm (9 weeks $160 members/$180 non-members). Click here for more information.  

Review for the New York State Fourth Grade Science Assessment  This Spring, fourth graders can come to the Rye Nature Center for weekly review sessions on the Life Science curriculum in preparation for the state assessment. Beginning Tuesdays in April,6. Last session is May 18.  3:30 - 4:30 pm. $25per student per session.
 
Mommy & Me   For 2 - 4 year-olds with their parent or caregiver. Join the menagerie for nine Mondays of interactive songs, activities, and animal fun.  Date and time to be determined.  $160 members/$180 non-members.

SPRING CALENDAR OF EVENTS AND PROGRAMS

Ongoing until March 27 - Summer Camp Early Bird Registration -Calling all young naturalists, scientists, and ecologists! Early bird registrants receive a 5% discount. Go to www.ryenaturecenter.org/education.html for brochures and registration forms!

Thursdays through Fall Phenology 10am - Participate in a national study investigation the changes that occur to trees as a result of global warm. Volunteers alone or with a partner spend about one hour a week making observations. Once monthly lesson are the First Thursday of each month at 10am. No botanical knowledge necessary. Recommended for adults over the age of 16.  For more information, email Mlpenziner@aol.com.

March 24 - School's Out Workshop: Frogs & Salamanders 12:30 – 2:30 pm  School's out early!  Hike for resident amphibians and meet Pippi our tree frog. Elementary aged students only. $30 members/$40 non-members. 

March 25 - Talk "Garden With Ferns" with Michael Penziner -7:30 Flowers won't bloom well in shade? We'll tell you how to make your shady areas a point of interest. Learn which ferns make wonderful ground covers, which form eye catching clumps or which stay green all winter long. Admission is Free! Pre-Registration required. Call 967-5150 for details.

March 29 – April 2 Spring Break Vacation Camp 10:00 am – 2:00 pm Pre-school & Elementary Students. Take a nature break. Spend a day or the whole week Pre-registration required. Members $55/day, non-members $65/day.

April 17 The Buzz About Bees 2:00 – 3:00 pm While youngsters explore the world of bees with environmental educator Henry Myers, adults will  buzz around resident beekeeper Henry King for a fascinating look at the life of honeybees. $8.00 members; $10.00 non-members.

April 21 - Talk "Alternative Energy Today" with Kristin Quell-Garguilo  7:30 -Do you want to save money? Do you want to save the planet Earth? Alternative energy is a common term used for green energy practices around the world. Come to Rye Nature Center to hear about what you can do in your home and community to become more energy efficient. Admission is Free! Pre-Registration required. Call 967-5150 for details.

April 22 Earth Day!

April 24 Earth Day Celebration! 12:30-3:00 - Join us for an outdoor celebration that will include educational activities sponsored by various environmental and eco-minded organizations. In addition, SUNY purchase students will be here to encourage you to participate in a performance that celebrates the value of a tree and how it effects every life form from fungi to humans. Children of all ages are welcome to come watch, play and listen along to celebrate Earth Day and the 350th anniversary of the City of Rye!

May 1 Citizen Water Quality Monitoring 9:00 am This program is part of Westchester County’s comprehensive program to protect the county’s water. Volunteers collect stream data to add to the baseline of water quality data for local streams to document the health of them.  No prior experience necessary. After completing the workshop, join a team of volunteers to collect data on a local stream or organize your own team. Suitable for ages 16 and up.  The event will be held rain or shine. Wear sturdy footwear. Being waders or borrow a pair from us. Admission: FREE. May 5, 12, 19, 26 Weber's Wednesday Warbler Walks 7:45 – 9:00 am Join local bird expert Hank Weber for a walk through RNC to spot the illusive warbler. Learn to bird-by-ear and enjoy the fun and challenge of actually spotting them. Experienced and beginning birders welcome. Loaner binoculars will be available. Co-sponsored by Central Westchester Audubon Society.  Admission: Free. Registration not required.

May 12 School's Out Nature Workshop: Bugs & Gardens 10:00 AM – 2:00 pm No School! Plant in the butterfly garden and learn about local caterpillars. Visit the pond and scoop for dragonfly nymphs. Elementary aged students only. Bring your lunch, hiking shoes, and enthusiasm. $55 members/$65 non-members.

June 14 - 19 & June 22 - 26 June Bugs  9:30 – 11:30 AM or 12:30 – 2:30 pm Pre-school students get an early start to summer. Sign up for one week, two weeks, or play it day by day. June Bug participants will enjoy arts and crafts, games, music, stories, and outdoor activities. Per day rate: $35/members/$40 non-members. Per week: $175 for members/$200 non-members.
